Tim Tszyu Questions Errol Spence Jr.’s Hunger Before Saturday Fight

Tszyu says he wants to push the former unified champion into deep waters and find out if three years away from boxing has changed his desire to compete.

Tim Tszyu believes Errol Spence Jr.’s toughest opponent on Saturday night could be his own motivation after three years away from the ring. The Australian says he wants to force the former unified champion into a demanding fight that reveals whether he still has the desire to compete at the highest level.

“Instead of a tactical fight, I want this to be a fight that makes him ask himself ‘how bad do you really want this?’ When you’ve made all that money and had some time off, what’s your real motivation?” said Tim. “Do you really want to keep going when it gets hard? For me, I’m all in.”

Tszyu isn’t dismissing Spence’s talent. He’s questioning what years away from competition and financial success may have done to the former champion’s drive.

Tszyu also described Saturday’s main event as the biggest occasion of his career, placing it above previous headline fights against Jeff Horn, Tony Harrison and Sebastian Fundora.

“I’ve had a couple of these big moments. The first was the Jeff Horn fight, then Tony Harrison. Even with the Fundora fights, it didn’t feel like this. This feels like something different,” said Tszyu. “When you put it all on the line to roll the dice, it just gives me a feeling that’s hard to describe. When I feel it, I embrace it.”

Spence says that preparing for his return wasn’t easy after such a long layoff.

“Training camp was hard. There were times where I just wanted to go home. It took a while for my body to really get adjusted to pushing the pace and going all out,” said Spence.

“People can think what they want to think about the weight, but on fight night they’re gonna see something different.”

The psychological battle has become one of the most interesting things about this fight. Tszyu believes Saturday will reveal if Spence still has the same competitive fire that made him one of boxing’s elite champions.
