Tim Tszyu Says $20 Million Changed Errol Spence Jr.’s Mindset

The Australian believes financial success changes a fighter’s outlook but insists Spence is taking Sunday’s showdown seriously.

Tim Tszyu believes Errol Spence Jr.’s biggest paydays have changed the way he approaches boxing ahead of Sunday’s Amazon Prime fight in Sydney. The Australian says his own hunger comes from still chasing the sport’s highest rewards, while Spence has already reached them.

“When you make $20 million in one fight, of course your perspective is going to change. You know, you’re going to train, and you’re going to train or go to the gym, I don’t know, to feel good, not to be a warrior, you know,” said Tszyu. “Unfortunately, when I’ve lost, I’ve just gone back to back to back sparring. I’ll keep on going because I need to get to that very, very top till I make my $20 million a fight. So, yeah.”

Tszyu described boxing as the overwhelming priority in his life, saying he remains consumed by the sport because he still has major goals left to accomplish. He contrasted that outlook with Spence, who has spent the last three years away from competition after earning some of the largest purses of his career.

Earlier in the media session, Tszyu rejected the idea that Spence was overlooking him or treating the bout as an easy payday.

“No, he’s taking it seriously, man. You get to this stage, you both have to take it seriously.”

Sunday’s fight gives Tszyu a chance to test his belief that hunger can overcome a fighter who has already reached boxing’s financial summit.
