Spencer Brown says another bout likely after layoff as Joshua fight timing remains uncertain
Tyson Fury could take another fight before facing Anthony Joshua, according to manager Spencer Brown. The move adds another step before the long-discussed bout, with timing now dependent on both men completing interim fights.
“The thing is, Tyson Fury has been out of the ring for two years. He just jumped back in. We’ll probably want another fight before the AJ fight, a proper warm-up, and then we’re ready to go,” Brown said on Instagram.
The version of Tyson Fury who showed up against Arslanbek Makhmudov was a far cry from the peak “Gypsy King.”
If he looked that slow and stationary against a guy like Makhmudov, his team is likely looking for a very specific type of opponent for this next outing, someone who can provide the rounds without posing a genuine threat to that massive Joshua payday. The matchmaking for this warm-up will have to be incredibly strategic.
Given Fury’s age and lethargy in his last outing against Makhmudov, the vetting process will likely focus on fighters who meet these criteria: low volume, limited mobility, and ranking compliance.
If Spencer Brown and the team accidentally slip up and match him with a hungry, mid-tier heavyweight like Martin Bakole or Richard Torrez Jr., the Joshua fight could fall apart.
This warm-up is less about shaking off rust and more about keeping a fading star burning until the AJ check clears.
A Fury-Joshua fight has been discussed for years and has fallen apart more than once, making any fresh update significant for heavyweight fans in the UK and beyond.
Joshua is already scheduled to return on July 25 in Riyadh against Kristian Prenga. If Fury also boxes once more first, the long-awaited showdown could come later in the year.
