Floyd Patterson finally faced Sonny Liston on September 25, 1962, at Chicago’s Comiskey Park. After years of resistance to the matchup, the heavyweight champion lost his title in 2 minutes and 6 seconds. The speed of the knockout was shocking. The physical mismatch was plain to see.
Patterson (38-2, 29 KOs) had built his offense around a crouch, quick movement, and hooks thrown as he sprang forward. Liston (33-1, 23 KOs) weighed 213 pounds to Patterson’s 189. For Patterson to land his best punches, he first had to cross the distance where Liston’s jab and heavier hands were most dangerous.
That was the tactical trap. Patterson’s high guard and head movement gave him ways to avoid punches while advancing, but he still needed to get close enough to fire. Against Liston, getting close offered no relief. The larger man had the strength to meet him there and the room to throw an uppercut when Patterson crouched in front of him.
Liston landed that right uppercut about halfway through the opening round. Patterson gave ground under the punches that followed, losing the forward motion his offense required. Once he was near the ropes, he had less space to slip away or launch a hook of his own. Liston finished the attack with a left hook that put him down. Patterson reached his knees but did not beat referee Frank Sikora’s count.
It would be too easy to blame Patterson’s peekaboo style alone. He had used it to win the championship twice. Liston presented a particular danger to that style: a 24-pound weight advantage, long reach, and enough power to punish Patterson before he could turn an entry into an attack. In those 126 seconds, Patterson never made Liston pay for holding his ground.
Patterson had insisted on facing the leading contender despite Cus D’Amato’s objections. He also had a contractual right to try again. The rematch came on July 22, 1963, and Liston knocked him out in the first round once more, at 2:10. Four extra seconds did nothing to change the matchup.
