Stevenson says no real negotiations took place and insists he still views himself as a lightweight despite winning at 140

Shakur Stevenson says the recent talk surrounding a fight with Devin Haney never developed into serious negotiations despite growing fan interest in the matchup. Stevenson also made it clear he still considers himself a lightweight and does not plan to move permanently to welterweight anytime soon.

“I feel like even with the talks, right, with the Devin Haney situation, I feel like the talks started from team Haney, but it never was a real negotiation or reach out, let’s talk about this, or it never was that kind of like thing,” said Shakur to the Boxing With Steph YouTube channel.

“But for me personally, I just feel like I’m willing to fight any and everybody. Anybody you name they want to rumble, I’m different under them lights. I’m not the same guy that they talk about under them lights.”

Stevenson also pointed to weight as a major issue surrounding the fight. Haney has already moved to welterweight, while Stevenson says he still sees himself as a lightweight despite recently winning a world title at 140.

“Fans want me to just move up fight after fight,” Shakur said. “That was my first time ever at 140. You know why they want me to move up fight after fight? Because I’m that good.”

“I just don’t think like right now I’ll be fighting at 147. I feel like that’s going to come in the years to come. I feel like 47 will be my last weight class.”

Shakur stated that he still plans to campaign at lightweight moving forward.

“I’m a 35-pounder,” he said. “I plan on fighting at 35, but I’m willing to fight anybody at 142.”
