Shakur Stevenson Revives Devin Haney Catchweight Demand

Shakur Stevenson ignited fresh discussion Friday night by reposting Devin Haney’s June offer to fight at a 144-pound catchweight, adding nothing more than a 🔥 emoji. The timing drew attention because Haney’s ordered WBO welterweight title defense against Keyshawn Davis has collapsed, reopening one of boxing’s biggest available fights.

The repost also brought back a negotiating position that previously went nowhere.

Earlier this summer, Shakur didn’t stop at requesting the weight compromise. He also wanted Haney to relinquish his WBO welterweight title before the fight. Haney never publicly agreed to that proposal. His attention stayed on the mandatory title defense against Shakur’s friend, Keyshawn, until he withdrew today.

Some fans viewed Shakur’s demand for Haney to vacate the belt as an attempt to help Keyshawn become WBO champion without fighting for the title. That theory has circulated for weeks, but the financial incentives tell a different story.

Davis stood to earn far more by fighting Haney than by competing for a vacant title. A victory over Haney would have delivered the WBO belt and the biggest purse of his career. An elevation to champion or a vacant-title fight against another contender offered far less financial upside.

Haney remains one of the division’s biggest attractions despite the criticism he receives from portions of the boxing public. None of the other names near the top of the WBO rankings offer the same drawing power or earning potential.

Shakur’s latest social media post leaves one obvious question. Was he simply reminding Haney of the earlier catchweight discussion, or does he still expect the same conditions that stalled negotiations the first time?

Haney holds a stronger hand than he did a month ago. Without a mandatory defense tying up his schedule, he can evaluate other options and decide whether to entertain a 144-pound compromise or insist that any new talks take place at the full 147-lb welterweight limit.
