Shakur Stevenson downplayed Alan Chaves after Chaves stopped Miguel Madueno with a third-round knockout. The comment comes as Chaves climbs the WBO rankings and pushes into the title picture.

After lightweight contender Alan Chaves scored a knockout win over Miguel Madueno and started drawing fresh attention, Stevenson answered online with a line that looked dismissive on the surface.

“Who is Chaves?” said Shakur on X last Saturday night, following Chaves’ one-punch KO victory in the third round over Madueno.

That kind of reply can serve a clear purpose. By acting unfamiliar with a rising name, a champion tries to cool hype before it becomes public pressure. If Stevenson openly praises Chaves or treats him as a serious target, he helps elevate him. By brushing him aside, he keeps Chaves in the prospect lane rather than the proven-contender lane.

It is a common move in boxing politics. Recognition has value. Mentioning a dangerous fighter as an equal can create fan demand, media talk, and sanctioning-body scrutiny. Refusing to validate the name can slow all three.

Stevenson has used a similar approach before. During exchanges with Ernesto Mercado, he turned the question back on the challenger and asked whether Mercado would even sign if a contract arrived. That flips the storyline. Instead of the champion defending why a fight is not happening, the challenger is made to look unsure or unserious.

Chaves, however, has something stronger than social media talk working for him: rankings. He is near the top of the WBO list, and those positions can eventually create obligations.

That is why these posts only buy time. A contender can be kept in the prospect box publicly, but one more win can move him straight into the mandatory slot.
