Oscar Duarte welcomes brawl with Angel Fierro on May 2

Fierro’s recent losses raise questions ahead of pressure fight on Benavidez vs Ramirez undercard

Oscar Duarte expects a physical fight when he faces Angel Fierro on the May 2 undercard in Las Vegas. Fierro’s recent run, however, puts his durability under the spotlight against a heavy-handed 140-pounder.

Duarte made it clear during fight week that he sees Fierro as an opponent built for a crowd-pleasing fight.

“I’m pumped up, because Angel is someone that likes to brawl and is someone who represents a really good fight,” Duarte said. “I’m excited for that, but I’m only relying on myself, really, because I know I had a great preparation.”

Duarte (30-2-1, 23 KOs) said that he enters the bout off an extended camp after a previous postponement, leaving him confident in his conditioning.

“This training camp was preceded by the one I had before, when the fight was postponed, so I couldn’t be more ready,” he said. “I’m ready to show who I am,” said Duarte.

Fierro (23-4-2, 18 KOs), meanwhile, kept his message simple, focusing on securing the win and delivering for his supporters.

“I’m here to be better than ever and to come out with the win on Saturday,” Fierro said. “You’re going to see a show on Saturday night.”

Fierro is a warrior, but that 1-3 stretch is a massive red flag. He’s essentially been a professional human punching bag for the last year and a half.

While he’s only 27, those aren’t easy losses. He’s been through the meat grinder with guys like Isaac Cruz and even suffered a bizarre DQ loss recently against Abraham Cordero that suggests the wheels might be coming off.

Fierro hasn’t had a soft touch to rebuild his confidence or let him rest. Jumping straight in with Duarte, who is a natural, heavy-handed 140-pounder, feels like a recipe for disaster.

The lightweight matchup adds another aggressive style fight to a card that both fighters believe will deliver for fans, with neither side suggesting a cautious approach once the opening bell sounds.

Duarte vs. Fierro will be meeting in a 12-round bout on the undercard of David Benavidez vs. Gilberto Ramirez at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video PPV.
