Schofield’s promoter says a proposal is expected soon as the WBA deadline approaches for Davis’ mandatory title defense

Gervonta Davis could be a step closer to returning to the ring after Oscar De La Hoya revealed progress in talks for a fight with Floyd Schofield Jr. With a WBA negotiation deadline approaching, Schofield’s promoter says a proposal is expected within days.

“We’re waiting for a proposal, which should happen in the next few days,” De La Hoya said to Fight Hub TV. “That’s the fight that Floyd always wanted. That’s a fight that I believe Tank Davis will be very motivated to make happen.

“It’s a great fight. I think, look, Floyd, people have seen him fight. He’s performed very well. He’s surprised a lot of people. This is a natural fit for him next. So, the fact that the WBA ordered this fight and we can make it happen very soon is music to my ears. I think this is one of those fights that the fight fans will really, really fall in love with.”

Davis (31-0-1, 29 KOs) has not fought since his controversial majority draw with Lamont Roach Jr. in March 2025. Many observers believed Roach deserved the decision after a disputed knockdown ruling went against him. Davis was later named WBA champion in recess as legal issues cast doubt over when, or if, he would return to the sport.

Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs), meanwhile, has steadily climbed the rankings to secure the mandatory position. The unbeaten 23-year-old was originally scheduled to challenge Shakur Stevenson before illness forced him out during fight week. Since then, he has strengthened his standing in the division, most recently stopping former world champion Tevin Farmer inside a round.

De La Hoya also suggested that a showdown with Davis has long been the target for Schofield’s team.

Schofield currently occupies the #1 position in the WBA rankings, making him Davis’ mandatory challenger.
