The unbeaten heavyweight champion gave a direct answer when asked who stands above every fighter in boxing history
Oleksandr Usyk says Muhammad Ali remains the greatest fighter in boxing history despite Usyk’s own unbeaten run through the heavyweight division. The undisputed champion gave the short response while discussing all-time heavyweight greatness during an interview with Mail Sport Boxing.
Usyk became an undisputed champion at cruiserweight before repeating the feat at heavyweight, defeating Tyson Fury twice as well as earning victories over Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois during his run at the top of the division.
The 39-year-old has regularly been mentioned in debates involving heavyweight greats from different eras, with many fans discussing how he would have fared against fighters such as Larry Holmes, Lennox Lewis, and Evander Holyfield.
Asked by Mail Sport Boxing to name the greatest fighter of all time, Usyk gave a short response.
“GOAT.”
Usyk was referring to Muhammad Ali, who remains one of the most recognizable figures in the history of the sport decades after his retirement.
Ali became a three-time world heavyweight champion and was involved in some of boxing’s most famous fights, including the “Rumble in the Jungle” victory over George Foreman and the “Thrilla in Manila” against Joe Frazier. Ali won an Olympic gold medal before beginning his professional heavyweight career.
He retired with 56 victories from 61 professional fights and is still widely regarded by many former champions and historians as the greatest heavyweight of all time.
Usyk is not the only modern heavyweight to place Ali at the top, with Mike Tyson also repeatedly calling him the greatest fighter the sport has produced.
