Mexico vs The World Offers Few Even Matchups

Boxing 24/7 Wire - 10/08/2026 - Comments

The October 31 Canelo Alvarez–Christian Mbilli card in Riyadh has several recognizable Mexican names supporting the main event, but Mike Coppinger’s description of the undercard as “stacked” looks generous when judging the matchups.

Jaime Munguia, Rafael Espinoza, Lindolfo Delgado and David Picasso feature on the DAZN show, billed as “Mexico vs. The World.” There is enough name recognition to draw attention, although the leading undercard fights appear to favor the featured Mexican fighters.

“Mexico vs. The World undercard is stacked for Oct. 31 in Riyadh,” Coppinger posted on X, highlighting Team Mexico’s combined 264-11 record against Team World’s 176-4.

Several replies challenged Coppinger’s description of the undercard. “Some okay to good fighters fighting cans,” wrote @CFC_STEZZY, while another reader asked what had happened to the WBA’s order for Munguia to face Bektemir Melikuziev. The criticism focused on the opponents chosen for the featured fighters, rather than the combined records used to promote the show.

Those totals look good in promotional material. They tell readers little about who the fighters have beaten or whether their experience prepares them for the opposition awaiting them in Riyadh. An unbeaten record can survive for years without being tested against a leading contender.

Espinoza defends his WBO featherweight title against Lorenzo Parra. The Mexican champion brings a 28-0 record into the bout, while the Venezuelan challenger is 24-1-1, according to the event’s press release. Espinoza gives the supporting card an established champion, but Parra has to prove he can compete at that level.

Munguia defends his WBA super middleweight belt against Nikita Zon, whose 12-0-1 record offers considerably less professional experience than the champion’s 46-2. Munguia’s pending mandatory obligation to Bektemir Melikuziev adds a separate question to that selection.

Delgado meets Arthur Biyarslanov at light welterweight, while Picasso faces unbeaten Filipino Carl Martin. Biyarslanov and Martin have opportunities to change their careers, though unbeaten challengers alone do not turn a supporting lineup into a collection of evenly matched fights.

The main event supplies the card’s strongest selling point. Canelo faces a pressure fighter in Mbilli whose pace could force him to work throughout the night. The undercard offers additional names and title defenses, but its depth should be judged by the competition those bouts produce.

An upset could make the evening memorable. On paper, however, the leading supporting fights look more likely to deliver victories for the featured fighters than a series of contests with uncertain outcomes.
