Lawrence Okolie faces Tony Yoka on Saturday in Paris with both under pressure

Heavyweight bout sees both fighters looking to stay in contention at Adidas Arena

Lawrence Okolie faces Tony Yoka on April 25 in Paris in a heavyweight bout with both fighters seeking momentum. The fight headlines a DAZN card at Adidas Arena. Coverage is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. ET in the United States, with main-event ringwalks expected around 5:00 p.m. ET, depending on the undercard.

Okolie, a former cruiserweight titleholder, moved to heavyweight after his 2023 defeat to Chris Billam-Smith and has since won four straight fights. Questions remain about how far his awkward, clinch-heavy style can carry him in a deeper division.

Lawrence is actually sitting pretty right now. He’s ranked #1 by the WBC, which is wild considering he’s only had a handful of fights at heavyweight. He’s basically holding that spot hostage. If he beats Yoka, he’s next in line for whoever holds the belt after the Usyk/Fury/Kabayel situation shakes out.

The key for Okokie is to rely on the Octopus style. It’s ugly, but it’s hard to beat. He can win ugly decisions against better athletes just by neutralizing them.

Yoka, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist, also enters on a four-fight winning streak, but those victories followed a three-fight slide that halted the early momentum of his professional career. Fighting at home in France, he has a chance to post the most meaningful win of his recent run.

Even after those three straight losses to Bakole, Takam, and Merhy, Yoka is still the “Golden Boy” in France. As long as he doesn’t get sparked out on Saturday, he remains a valuable B-side for any top heavyweight looking for a trip to Paris.

The 6’7″ Yoka must use his amateur pedigree and home-court advantage. He’s trying to prove the 2016 Gold Medal wasn’t his ceiling, but at 33, the clock is ticking.

Neither man can afford another setback. The winner stays in the European heavyweight picture and moves toward stronger opportunities later this year. The loser risks slipping closer to opponent status.
