Roach believes a future showdown with Stevenson would settle who stands at the top of the 135-pound division

Lamont Roach believes a fight with Shakur Stevenson would determine the best lightweight in boxing. Roach identified Stevenson as the division’s standard-bearer and said a future meeting would answer the biggest question at 135 pounds.

“I say 35,” said Roach to Fighthype when asked where a fight with Stevenson would take place. “Once I win the championship, I know he’ll probably want to reclaim it and be champion, the same belt that he had. So, we’ll see.”

“I think that’s a fight. I think that’s the best fighter in the division at 135 pounds, and I think that will define who’s the best at 135, which is one of the hottest divisions right now.”

Roach was also asked whether Stevenson would have any interest in fighting for the WBC title again after giving up the belt following his move to junior welterweight.

“You never know, man,” said Roach. “With talks in this business, money talks. So, we’ll see.”

Roach said that he intends to continue campaigning at lightweight despite previously discussing possible opportunities at 140 pounds.

“I’m campaigning at 35. So I’ll be at 35 for a long time,” said Roach. “But if opportunities present at 40, I will take them. I’m not trying to wait.”

Asked about a potential fight with Gervonta Davis, Roach said he remains interested if the opportunity becomes available.

“If he can, I would love to get in the ring with him,” said Lamont.

Roach’s focus remains on capturing a world title at 135 pounds. If he succeeds, he believes a fight with Stevenson could become one of the biggest bouts available in the division.
