Unified title challenger says working alongside Canelo Alvarez added new tools ahead of his showdown with Xander Zayas

Jaron “Boots” Ennis says fans could see new elements in his style when he faces Xander Zayas on Saturday after learning from Canelo Alvarez during a recent sparring camp. The unbeaten challenger believes the experience improved his game ahead of one of the biggest fights of his career.

Boots said working alongside Canelo gave him the opportunity to study one of boxing’s biggest stars and add elements of the Mexican champion’s style to his own ahead of Saturday’s title fight with Xander Zayas.

“I was just taking sparring Canelo. It was a great thing,” Ennis told Fight Hub TV. “Eighty, 70 fights in, and I was just picking his brain, learning different things and putting it into my arsenal. It was a great experience.”

Ennis did not offer an opinion on Canelo’s recent fight against Terence Crawford, explaining that his focus during the camp was solely on preparing for his own move to 154 pounds rather than evaluating someone else’s bout.

“I went out there for me. I was just getting ready for my 154 debut at that time and just getting out of Philadelphia, doing different things,” Ennis said. “I was out there fishing and chilling with my squad. It was something great, and I was glad I was able to do that.”

Ennis will have the chance to put those lessons into practice against Zayas in one of the biggest fights of his career.

Asked if he was surprised Zayas accepted the challenge, he said he expected the fight to happen and predicted the championship belts would be returning home with him.

“I ain’t surprised,” Ennis said. “That’s good for him, but them belts come back home to Philadelphia.”

Jaron has spent years relying on his speed, athleticism, and ring IQ. On Saturday, he says fans could also see some of the techniques he picked up from sharing the ring with Canelo.
