British contender reacts after reports suggest Romero could take a voluntary fight before his ordered title defense
Jack Catterall has publicly challenged WBA welterweight champion Rolly Romero after reports emerged that the titleholder could take a voluntary fight before facing his ordered challenger. The British contender made his frustration clear as questions continue to surround Romero’s next move.
Romero is reportedly being lined up for a summer return, with no major test expected in what would be his first fight since defeating Ryan Garcia in May 2025. The development was reported by The Ring’s Mike Coppinger.
Catterall did not hide his frustration.
Pathetic ! What are you waiting for @SignUp4KOs ? When you do have this ridiculous run out don’t be vacating 🦆 https://t.co/GKfzesNJpm

Catterall is currently in line for a shot at Romero after the WBA recently ordered the champion to defend his title against the British contender.
More than 12 months have passed since Romero claimed the WBA title with his victory over Garcia, yet the belt remains without a defense. Giyasov spent months pursuing a shot at the champion before ultimately turning his attention elsewhere.
Giyasov ultimately turned his attention to Catterall, meeting the British southpaw on the May 23 “Glory in Giza” event in Egypt. Catterall emerged with a unanimous decision victory, adding the WBA International welterweight title to his résumé and positioning himself for a shot at the division’s main titleholder.
The sanctioning body later elevated Catterall’s status by matching him with Romero, making the pair the focus of the WBA’s welterweight title picture.
That is why reports of a potential interim fight for Romero have drawn such a strong reaction. With the WBA already directing the two camps toward a championship bout, Catterall is clearly signaling that he believes he should be next in line.
