“I Know I’m Better Than Him”: Steven Butler Vows To Knock Out Edgar Berlanga

The Canadian contender says Berlanga is focused on future fights, while he is focused only on scoring an upset in New York.

Steven Butler believes Edgar Berlanga is making a mistake by looking beyond Sunday’s fight in New York. The Canadian contender says his only focus is beating Berlanga, a victory he believes would change the course of his career.

While Berlanga has spoken confidently about future opponents, Butler made it clear his attention is locked on the task in front of him. He believes a victory would create far bigger opportunities than anything he has experienced to this point.

Discussing the fight, Butler explained that respect remains despite the pre-fight talk.

“I’m excited because the fight is coming up on Sunday night and I think we both are excited to be back in the ring. I don’t hate Berlanga, man. I respect him for his person and his personality and for the boxer he is. But I think, and I know, I’m better than him. So that’s what I want to show,” said Butler to Fighthype.

“If I beat Berlanga, a lot of doors are going to open for me. I don’t want to look past Berlanga like he does. He talks to fight Eubank in November, fight Munguia, fight, fight, fight. I want to get the victory. I’m a puncher, and I’m going to hurt him if I have the opportunity. I’m going to knock him out.”

The fight represents a major opportunity for Butler, who has been cast as the underdog entering the contest. A win over Berlanga would immediately put his name into conversations for bigger fights in the super middleweight division. A loss would leave him searching for another path back into contention.
