The former WBA featherweight champion hunts a fifth straight stoppage in Guadalajara as his push toward a 130-pound title fight gathers pace.
Mauricio Lara puts his rebuilding run on the line against Carlos Ornelas on August 29 in Guadalajara. Another victory would move the former WBA featherweight champion closer to a shot at a super featherweight world title.
Lara, 30-3-2 (23 KOs), has rebuilt momentum since moving to 130 pounds and enters the 10-round main event seeking a fifth consecutive stoppage. A victory would further strengthen his position in one of boxing’s most competitive divisions.
The path back to the top has already included some of the biggest wins of his career. Lara stunned Josh Warrington in England before knocking out Leigh Wood to capture the WBA featherweight title in 2023. Three years after losing that belt, his focus is fixed on becoming a two-weight world champion.
“Bronco Lara is back,” said Lara. “I will show the world why I once was world champion and that I am ready for any 130lb fighter. It’s been three years since I lost my title, so I am focused on becoming world champion again.”
Ornelas, 29-5 (16 KOs), presents another important hurdle. The Mexican returned to winning ways with a second-round stoppage in February after suffering a defeat to current WBO lightweight champion Abdullah Mason last year. An upset would push him into contention at 130 pounds.
“I’m sending Bronco into retirement,” said Ornelas.
The bout headlines a DAZN card from Complejo Deportivo Artes Marciales in Guadalajara.
