Hrgovic broke Allen down with body shots, and heavy combinations before Jamie Moore stopped the fight in Doncaster

Filip Hrgovic returned to the win column Saturday night by stopping Dave Allen in the third round after a one-sided heavyweight performance in Doncaster. Hrgovic controlled the fight behind his jab, straight right hand, and body attack before Allen’s corner threw in the towel during a heavy assault.

The Croatian heavyweight increased the pressure in round two, pinning Allen along the ropes and unloading combinations to the head and body. Allen absorbed punishment but struggled to slow Hrgovic’s pace or create sustained offense of his own.

The finish came in the third round after Hrgovic (20-1,15 KOs) landed a hard body shot and followed with a series of hooks and right hands that left Allen (25-9-2, 20 KOs) trapped under sustained pressure. Moore stepped in and stopped the fight before further damage could be done.

“What you saw here tonight was a fairy tale story that didn’t quite have the ending,” said promoter Eddie Hearn to DAZN Boxing, reacting to his fighter, Allen’s loss. “What you also saw was a British-level heavyweight against a world-class heavyweight in Filip Hrgovic, who was much too good.

“But what Dave has done, and I think that’s why this place was so busy tonight, and Sheffield Arena was so busy, is because Dave is a normal guy, and I’ll be honest with you was completely out of the game. I wondered and worried what Dave Allen was going to do for the rest of his life.

“In the last couple of years, he’s got his nut down and found his way. He’s an inspiration to people who might not think there’s an answer and might not think there’s a way out.”
