Fans on X rejected Canelo’s suggestion that Munguia could eventually become the face of Mexican boxing
Canelo Alvarez says he would love to see Jaime Munguia become the next face of Mexican boxing, but many fans strongly disagree. Reaction across X quickly turned negative after Canelo publicly backed Munguia despite lingering criticism surrounding his recent performances and résumé.
Canelo praised Munguia and said he hoped to eventually pass the torch to him.
“I hope, and I would love to pass the torch to Munguia. Why not?” said Canelo on the Mr. Verzace podcast.
The reaction online was harsh almost immediately after the clip spread across X. Fans pointed to Munguia’s recent knockout loss to Bruno Surace in December 2024, a fight many viewed as a safe showcase bout for him before he was stopped in the sixth round. Although Munguia later avenged the defeat, controversy followed after he was flagged for a PED issue connected to that fight camp.
Munguia then returned earlier this month, on May 2, and captured the WBA title with a 12-round decision win over Armando Resendiz, but critics viewed Resendiz as a vulnerable champion rather than a major test. That has left many fans unconvinced that Munguia has done enough to inherit the position Canelo held for years as the leading Mexican star in boxing.
“Caynelo don’t decide that, the fans do,” one user posted.
“Face of Mexican boxing will be a Bruno Surace victim,” another fan wrote.
Others questioned Munguia’s standing among the top fighters at 168 pounds and argued that his recent wins still have not erased doubts created by the Surace knockout loss. For many fans, Canelo’s comments sounded more like loyalty toward a fighter from his own team than a reflection of what Munguia has accomplished against elite opposition.
