Edgar Berlanga Still Selling Canelo Loss Like A Triumph

Berlanga praises performance against Saul Alvarez, but reaction centers on one-sided result

Edgar Berlanga described his loss to Saul Alvarez as a major moment in his career despite a clear defeat on the scorecards. The comments have drawn attention as he prepares for the next phase of his career.

Berlanga described the bout in glowing terms and celebrated lasting the distance with Xanelo in September 2024.

“It was a crazy experience,” Berlanga said to the Danza Project. “You see, we went 12 rounds, and it was like back and forth.”

He then pushed it even further.

“It looked like Kobe versus Michael Jordan or something,” Berlanga said. “It was a movie scene.”

That is not how most viewers remember the fight.

Canelo controlled the action for nearly all of the first 11 rounds, scored a knockdown, landed the cleaner punches, and dictated the pace from start to finish. Berlanga’s best spell came in the 12th, when Canelo had a wide lead and was easing to the finish line.

Berlanga also said the night became something bigger than the result.

“I seen videos like there was block parties, blocks was shut down all through Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, bars was filled up,” he said. “I was like, ‘Damn, like we really did that.’”

After the fight, Berlanga traveled to Puerto Rico and took part in a heavily criticized celebration ride through the streets, standing in the back of a truck with a line of cars following behind him at night. It looked more like a victory parade than the aftermath of a clear defeat.

There is nothing wrong with pride in competing on a major stage. Getting paid, headlining with Canelo, and hearing your name in a sold-out arena are real achievements. Treating a one-sided loss as proof of greatness is where it starts to sound strange.
