The Matchroom chairman believes Jaron “Boots” Ennis could tempt Terence Crawford out of retirement if the unbeaten champion reaches superstar status
Eddie Hearn believes there is only one fight capable of bringing Terence Crawford out of retirement: Jaron “Boots” Ennis. Although Hearn says Crawford appeared physically content with retirement, he believes a showdown with Ennis could become too big for one of boxing’s greatest champions to ignore.
“When I have been around him, I have kind of felt like, physically, he has checked out. He talks about his body a lot; he talks about how it broke down, particularly in the last few camps, but Terence is an unbelievable fighter and a real competitor. He lives for competition,” said Hearn to the AH channel.
“So, I would never rule it out, but I didn’t get that feeling [that we would return] from talking to him personally, I guess anything is possible.”
If Crawford were ever to reconsider, Hearn already knows the fight he wants to make.
“If ‘Boots’ can get himself into a position where he is a superstar of the sport and there is a huge amount of money for Crawford to fight him, we would love that fight, because that is a fight that I have wanted for a long time. I think that they are two unbelievable fighters.”
The matchup has long been discussed by fans, but never materialized while Crawford was still active. Instead, Crawford chose to end his career after defeating Canelo, while Ennis continued his climb through the sport.
Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) gets another opportunity to strengthen his case as boxing’s next major star on Saturday when he challenges Xander Zayas for the WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. A victory would make him a unified champion in a second weight class and move him one step closer to the superstar status Hearn believes could tempt Crawford into one final fight.
