Lomachenko’s free-agent status reopened discussion about major fights after his reported return

Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson reacted quickly after reports emerged that Vasyl Lomachenko plans to return later this year. The bigger development may be Lomachenko’s new free-agent status after the expiration of his Top Rank contract.

Haney, whose disputed 2023 victory over Lomachenko still remains one of boxing’s most argued decisions, welcomed him back with a short post on social media.

“Wow.. welcome back Loma!” said Haney on X.

Shakur Stevenson also reacted after the report surfaced, posting a fire emoji as fans immediately revived talk of a fight that had once been discussed before Shakur moved to 140 pounds earlier this year.

Lomachenko retired after stopping George Kambosos Jr. to win the IBF lightweight title in May 2024. Back problems and fading motivation appeared to end his career, especially after years of fighting at the highest level.

Even at 38, Lomachenko still carries unusual value because of his technical style and reputation. During his peak years, top fighters openly struggled with his movement, angles, and punch placement, leading to the “No Mas Chenko” label after several opponents quit against him.

The comeback also revives unfinished business around Haney. Many fans believed Lomachenko had done enough to win their undisputed lightweight fight three years ago despite losing by unanimous decision.

Tank Davis is another name likely to be attached to the comeback rumors again. The two sides previously explored a fight before Lomachenko stepped away from the sport.

Ring reported that Lomachenko does not want a tune-up fight and is instead targeting a major opponent immediately. At his age, and with years of wear already on his body, there appears to be little interest in a slow return.
