Derek Chisora Eyes Another Title Chance At 42

Boxing 24/7 Wire - 10/06/2026 - Comments

Derek Chisora could receive another heavyweight title opportunity at 42, with Murat Gassiev mentioned as a possible opponent for his December return in England. The IBA announced plans for the bout in a press release, although the opponent, venue, and exact date remain unconfirmed.

That possibility is likely to irritate fans who already feel familiar names get too many chances. Chisora remains a ticket seller, but there is a reasonable argument that he is now a journeyman with a much bigger following than most. Giving him another title fight would be easier to explain through his drawing power than his claim to being among the division’s best.

“Derek said he wanted to come and support the IBA, because he’s happy with the way IBA is organising tournaments. And we promised him a bout. So we are going to organize a bout for Derek in England,” IBA president Umar Kremlev said in the release.

That is a promise of a fight, rather than confirmation of Gassiev defending his WBA heavyweight belt against Chisora. The release nevertheless promotes the possibility of a title opportunity, making that the obvious selling point.

Chisora has earned respect for taking difficult fights throughout his career. However, willingness to face good opponents does not automatically justify another championship chance. His 14 defeats are part of that discussion, particularly when younger heavyweights are trying to earn opportunities of their own.

The commercial attraction is clear. Chisora brings a British audience, an established name, and a style that usually produces action. Gassiev would get a recognizable opponent for an English event. Those benefits explain why the fight could happen, but they do little to answer whether Chisora deserves it.

There is also the matchup itself. Chisora’s pressure requires him to get close, where Gassiev’s punching power could make every exchange costly. At 42, relying on toughness against that kind of opponent is a hard way to chase a belt.

Chisora can still help sell a show. If this becomes a title fight, fans will have good reason to question whether selling tickets has become his strongest qualification.
