Saul “Canelo” Alvarez says his value in boxing remains unmatched, pointing to the revenue his name generates. The former undisputed champion made the comments during an appearance on the Cracks Podcast.

“No one generates what I generate,” said Canelo.

It’s a simple line, but it goes straight to how Canelo sees his place in the sport. He’s talking about what his name brings to a fight, not about belts or opponents.

The loss to Terence Crawford back in September really changed the conversation. Seeing a smaller guy move up two weight classes and outbox him for the undisputed 168-lb titles at Allegiant Stadium made it impossible for Canelo to claim he is the king of the division.

Since he can no longer lean on being the pound-for-pound #1 or the unbeatable force at super middleweight, the “revenue” argument is the only shield he has left.

After that 116-112, 115-113 loss, the aura of invincibility at 168 is gone. If he cannot boast about the results, he boasts about the gate.

“I’ve always said it, I don’t do this for money. But I want to make a lot. There are no limits,” said Canelo.

Fans haven’t forgotten that he spent years sidestepping David Benavidez. Now that Benavidez has moved on, Canelo’s talk of “no limits” to the money he wants to make feels like a justification for taking easier, high-paying fights instead of the ones that define a legacy.

It’s the classic late-stage career move: when you can’t win the mythical rankings, you win the Forbes list. He is still the biggest draw in the sport, but as you noted, using that as your primary flex is a clear sign that the peak of his boxing dominance is in the rearview mirror.

With his return targeted for September 12 in Saudi Arabia, he is relying on the “Mexico vs. The World” branding. It’s a marketing pivot because he knows he’s no longer the favorite in every elite matchup.
