Mbilli’s promoter says bout is not a showcase as Canelo returns after the loss to Crawford
Saul Alvarez will face Christian Mbilli on September 12 in Saudi Arabia. Mbilli’s promoter, Camille Estephan, said the fight is not being approached as a showcase. The fight will headline a Riyadh Season event in Saudi Arabia.
Canelo is coming off last year’s loss to Terence Crawford, which ended his run at the top of the division and scattered the belts after Crawford later retired.
Estephan believes Mbilli is arriving at the right moment.
“Let me tell you how this goes down. A lot of claims that Mbilli is the perfect style for Canelo. Christian is coming in violent and relentless. This is not a showcase. This is the arrival,” said Estephan on X.
Mbilli enters the fight unbeaten and was elevated to full WBC champion after Crawford vacated the title. The 30-year-old has built a reputation as one of the division’s more aggressive pressure fighters and now gets the biggest fight of his career against one of boxing’s biggest names.
Mbilli was elevated from interim to full WBC super middleweight champion after Terence Crawford vacated the title following his retirement. The unbeaten contender is coming off a 12-round draw against Lester Martinez last September.
Canelo, meanwhile, is attempting to reclaim a world title less than a year after the Crawford defeat changed the direction of his career. The fight will also mark his first appearance since confirming he would continue fighting despite speculation about retirement after the Crawford loss.
