Takuma Inoue kept his WBC bantamweight title against Tenshin Nasukawa on Sunday, but the way he had to fight for it makes a unification with Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez especially interesting. Nasukawa dropped Inoue in round seven and pushed him hard down the stretch. Rodriguez would enter that matchup with far more proven tools to sustain an attack.
The Ring raised the possibility of Inoue facing Rodriguez, who won the WBA bantamweight belt by stopping Antonio Vargas in June. Nothing has been announced, but putting their titles together offers Bam something beyond another belt: a victory over Takuma would make a future fight with his older brother Naoya much harder to ignore.
Takuma deserves credit for getting up against Nasukawa and protecting the lead he built early. He stayed organized after the knockdown and won a unanimous decision. That composure is a real strength. It does not mean he would get the same room to recover against Bam.
Rodriguez changes angles quickly, punches accurately in combination and goes to the body without giving up his offense. If he hurt Takuma, he would be better equipped than Nasukawa to keep him under pressure. Takuma’s jab and positioning could trouble Bam early, particularly at bantamweight, where Rodriguez has had only one fight. But Takuma does not have Naoya’s explosive hand speed or finishing power to make Bam hesitate every time he steps in.
A win over Takuma would bring Bam closer to a fight with Naoya and give that matchup a personal edge. It would not prove Rodriguez can beat the older brother. Naoya is faster, hits harder, and fights at 122 pounds, four pounds above Bam’s current division. But defeating Takuma first would give fans a reason to follow Bam’s move up in weight.
Takuma can spoil that story by doing what he did Sunday: bank rounds, stay disciplined, and survive the dangerous stretches. Based on the openings Nasukawa found, Bam would be the favorite. A unification would test that judgment in the ring before anyone asks Rodriguez to take on the more daunting Inoue brother.
