Antonio Tarver Gives Teofimo Blueprint He May Not Follow

Antonio Tarver believes Teofimo Lopez can defeat Rolando “Rolly” Romero by working behind the jab, staying mobile, and throwing three- and four-punch combinations. The strategy makes tactical sense, but it demands an offensive output Lopez has never consistently delivered.

“You just can’t be running around,” Tarver said to Fight Hub TV. “You got to be touching him, hitting him three, four times in combination, and then have Rolly chasing you. Have Rolly being overly aggressive, and now you’re able to get all those counterpunches off. Give him angles, turn him right into you. That’s the perfect fight for Teo.”

Tarver described the ideal game plan. The real issue is whether Lopez possesses the ring habits required to execute it.

Lopez is a potshot fighter built around quick reflex counters rather than sustained combinations. During his 2020 victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko, his offense relied mainly on one or two punches before he moved out of range. Lomachenko surrendered the first half of the fight while studying the distance, which allowed Teofimo to control rounds without maintaining a high work rate.

Against Shakur Stevenson, Lopez recycled the cautious tactics he had used against Arnold Barboza Jr. He fired sporadic single shots, backed away, and handed Shakur complete control over the pace.

William Zepeda provided the more effective blueprint against Shakur. He crowded him, attacked the body, and continued punching after the first shot met Shakur’s guard. That constant pressure prevented Shakur from dictating every exchange from long range. Lopez and his father either ignored that performance or recognized their fighter was not equipped to copy it.

Romero lacks elite technique, but his power makes low-output rounds dangerous. Pausing after one punch gives Rolly the time needed to set his feet and unload.

Tarver favors Lopez by a 60-40 margin, but his forecast relies on an offensive style Lopez has never shown. Teofimo can win rounds with sharp potshots, but expecting him to become a sustained combination puncher during one training camp is unrealistic.
