Fight fans have heard by now: Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez, a fighter who gets as pumped up by making history as he does by winning world titles, by pleasing the fans and by banking a ton of cash, will go for his fifth world title in as many weights next year.
Thomas Hearns enjoyed many, many great nights, and as we all know, “The Hitman” gave us many epic fights. From welterweight all the way up to cruiserweight, Hearns fought the best and he often walked away with the victory.
Earlier this year, we sadly and shockingly lost one of “The Four Kings,” as the truly great Marvelous Marvin Hagler passed away, this at a far, far too young age.
Two great welterweights collided 40 years ago in Las Vegas. It was, quite simply, a fight the whole world watched. And celebrated.

Thomas Hearns had two nicknames: Hitman, and Motor City Cobra. Capable of boxing with the best and of outboxing the best (see his fights with Sugar Ray Leonard, Wilfred Benitez and Virgil Hill), Hearns was also more than equipped with the ability and the weapons with which to ice many a formidable foe (see his KO wins over Roberto Duran, Pipino Cuevas and Juan Domingo Roldan).
Far and away my favorite fighter of “The Four Kings,” Thomas Hearns gave us so many great, great fights. Win or lose, Hearns gave his all and in doing so he gave us drama, raw excitement and boxing brilliance.
