Abel Sanchez: If Ward is afraid to fight Sullivan Barrera, who can he fight to make statement at 175?

By Carlos Ortiz: Unbeaten light heavyweight Sullivan Barrera is hoping to get a fight against former WBA 168lb champion in March. However, Ward, 31, is starting to make noises on Twitter saying that Barrera won’t be getting rich off him by getting a fight against him. Ward says there is no contract with Barrera, and he does not have any idea who his next opponent will be for March 26 on HBO.

The way Ward is talking, it’s giving many boxing fans the belief that he does not fancy the idea of fighting Barrera and would prefer another fight. Barrera’s trainer Abel Sanchez doesn’t know who Ward can fight in the light heavyweight division that will make a statement, and he feels that Ward lacks the courage to take on Barrera.

Big-hitting Russian Artur Beterbiev (9-0, 9ko) finally has an opponent for his IBF 175lb final eliminator – number #9 ranked Cuban, Sullivan Barrera (16-0, 11ko), in a fight that will determine the mandatory challenger to Beterbiev’s countryman and IBF, WBA (sup) and WBO light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kovalev.

Beterbiev’s team, including promoter Yvon Michel, recently opted out of facing Kovalev in Russia in November, choosing instead to go the eliminator route, and ostensibly give their man a little more time and experience before getting in with old foe Kovalev, whom incidentally Beterbiev beat twice previously in the amateurs.

Unbeaten Cuban light heavyweight prospect Sullivan Barrera (16-0, 11ko) , who fans last saw on the under card of Sergey Kovalev’s destruction of Nadjib Mohammedi last month, has publicly called out Canadian former world champion Jean Pascal.

Pascal boxed Barrera’s friend and fellow Cuban Yunieski Gonzalez on the same card in an all action thriller that saw the Haitian born fighter get the nod in a controversial decision – something former amatuer standout Barrera hasn’t taken kindly to – and he sees it as his duty to right the wrong as it were.
