By: Benjie Varella – Veteran Filipino boxer Eric Barcelona (47-15-4, 17 knockouts,) the Philippine Federation Champion and South African Simpewe Vetyeka (20-1, 12 knockouts) will slug it out on July 11 for the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) bantamweight world title at Emperors Palace, South Africa..
This will be Barcelona’s second crack at the title. He lost to a unanimous decision for the IBO bantamweight title November year 2006 to the African Golden Boy Tanzanian fighter Mbwana Matumla, the same fighter Filipino boxing prospect Aj “Bazzoka” Banal annihilated in two rounds last month.
With more fights and experience, Barcelona has vowed to bring home the title against the tough Vetyeka who is a world rated fighter. The South African was recently ranked as the number 1 contender in the latest WBC bantamweight ratings.
Vetyeka, the South African bantamweight champion’s only loss was against Hozumi Hasegawa for the WBC bantamweight title two years ago via a unanimous decision. Vetyeka’s team feels that they were simply robbed on points because they were fighting at the homeland of the Japanese fighter.
Both hungry for a title, the bout will surely be a brawl. Whoever has a bigger heart will emerge as the champion
