A Ring of Their Own Returns on June 23

Rock & Sock Productions in association with K.O. Boxing and 7X Boxing Promotions announce A Ring of Their Own: “Women of Mass Destruction”, June 23 at the Shaw Conference Center in Edmonton. Headlining this card in the main event will be Edmonton’s own WBC/WIBF Super Featherweight champion Jelena Mrdjenovich (15-1) battling Mia “The Knockout” St. John (43-6-2) in a 10 round bout.. To fight St. John, Mrdjenovich will step up in weight to fight at 135 pounds to challenge for the WIBF Lightweight Title.

St. John is no stranger to Edmonton boxing fans. The former Playboy cover girl acted as the color commentator for U.S. television when Jelena fought and defeated Layla McCarter of Las Vegas, Nevada in June 2005. St John is a savvy ring veteran who is one of the top draws in women’s boxing today. According to Arnie Rosenthal of Rock & Sock Productions “there is no question that Mia is one of the best and most popular female fighters in the world, and Jelena will have her hands full on June 23rd in Edmonton.” St. John has fought and beaten the top girls in her division throughout the world, and she currently holds the IFBA world Lightweight title.

The June event will be the fourth time in her career that Jelena steps into the ring in a world championship fight. When asked about her fight against St. John Jelena stated “boxing is all about respect, if you want respect in this business you have to fight the best girls out there, and in fighting Mia I know I am fighting one of the best.” Jelena went on to add that “I know that Mia in having fought over 40 times has a lot more experience than me, but I have youth and punching power on my side, which will send Mia scrambling for the exit doors. This will be a great fight.”

In addition to the Mrdjenovich-St. John World Title fight an additional female World Title match will highlight the “Women of Mass Destruction” card. Jeannine Garside (5-0) of Windsor, Ontario will be defending her WIBA Super Bantamweight belt in a rematch against former World Champion Lisa “Bad News” Brown (12-2-2) of Toronto.

Boxing fans will remember the war that Garside-Brown had on November 18, 2005 in Edmonton where Garside upset Brown to capture the WIBA title belt. Lisa claims ” I wasn’t right on for the first fight, but you can bet that I will recapture my belt, which is deservedly mine.” This will be a rematch to remember. Garside is also more than ready for her first title defense and stated: “I expect Lisa to have vengeance for me, and to try and take the title I’ve got, but it’s not gonna happen.”

The event will include a full undercard to be announced on a later date. Tickets may be purchased through TicketMaster or charge by phone (780) 451 8000.
