03.10.04 – Frank Maloney would like to clarify statements that he made at a press conference in Glasgow last Wednesday (29 September) to promote the Scott Harrison-Samuel Kebede WBO World Featherweight title fight on October 29 at the Braehead Arena.
At that time, Mr. Maloney made references to Joe Calzaghe’s WBO World Title defence against Kabary Salem which takes place on October 22 at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh.
Mr. Maloney said, “I made a tongue-in-cheek remark about a Welshman fighting in Scotland which has been taken totally in the wrong context,
“When I made those comments, I had the knowledge that the Edinburgh event was selling very well and I was trying to draw more attention to the Harrison fight that, should he win, will make him the most successful fighter in Scottish history with six world championship victories,
“I have great respect for Joe Calzaghe who has an illustrious fight record in the ring and would never look to disrespect him and apologise for any offence taken,
“Of course, I will be ringside supporting Joe in his world title defence and a week later I will be in Glasgow with Harrison watching him become a Scottish legend,”
“I believe Sports Network promoting these two world title fights in Scotland within a week of each other shows how strong boxing is in Scotland and am sure that this is only the beginning and will continue to go from strength-to-strength,”
Promoter Frank Warren said, “Sports Network are doing their best to bring the biggest names to fight in Scotland. We are grateful for the support the public and media continue to give us which is vital to make for two very successful shows in Edinburgh and Glasgow and will continue to do so in the future.”
