Froch vows to lead Nottingham revival

01.06.04 – Carl Froch has vowed to continue leading the revival of boxing in Nottingham from the front. The 26-year-old from Gedling makes his fourth appearance in the City that has played home to the likes of Wally Swift and David Needham on Wednesday 2nd June in a defence of his commonwealth super middleweight title against Canada’s ‘Machine Gun’ Mark Woolnough.

He co-headlines the talent laden Hennessy Sports ‘home II’ event at the Nottingham Arena with fellow world-class talent Junior Witter, who meets Italy’s Salvatore Battaglia for the vacant European light welterweight title.

“It is an honour to be boxing on such a bill,” said the Cobra. “It has become perhaps the most highly anticipated domestic promotion of the year.

“This is boxing at it used to be.

“This is boxing as it should be: cracking title fights with an outstanding undercard full of Britain’s best talent: Francis Barrett, Lee Meager, David Walker, John O’Donnell, Spartacus, Daniel Cadman, John Murray and Coleman Barrett. All future champions!”

Froch continued: “What other promoter would put me on the same bill as Junior Witter, with both of us in genuine title fights?

“Witter is one of the best pound for pound we have.

“In the very near future he is going to mix it with the best in the world and win. I am going to be following him.

“We will be bringing back real world honours to Britain.”

These will be defended in Nottingham.

“My promoter Mick Hennessy loves Nottingham and it’s people, he sees it is a real fight City; that is why he is prepared to invest in things like 50ft billboards with my photo on them,” added Carl.

“He has assured me that throughout my career I will box here 2-3 times a year.

“That is great news for me and Nottingham.

“I love boxing here, walking out in front of thousands of my supporters gives me a massive lift.

“They also get to see Britain’s best talent. Already I have appeared alongside Howard Eastman and Herbie Hide.

“Witter is next and equally as big names will follow. 2nd June is just the start of the big shows I will be appearing on.”

‘home II’ takes place at the Nottingham Arena on Wednesday June 2nd. It features Commonwealth super middleweight champion Carl Froch vs Mark Woolnough, Junior Witter vs Salvatore Battaglia, Francis Barrett vs Gavin Down and other Hennessy Sports stars.
