Clampitt Looks to Strike Oil

October 31, 2003

31.10.03 – By Ron DiMichele:‘Hurricane’ Jamie Clampitt of Narragansett, RI by way of Calgary, Alberta (Canada) will battle Eliza Olson of Fresno, CA Friday Oct. 31st for the vacant IWBF (International Women’s Boxing Federation) Light Welterweight Championship. The bout, scheduled to take place at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, RI, is Clampitt’s second attempt at an IWBF title. In 2001, she dropped a decision to Liz Mueller of New London, CT for the IWBF Lightweight crown.

“I‘m more of a complete package now,” said Clampitt shortly after Thursday‘s weigh-in. “Much better boxer. Much better power. I’ve had a lot more experience in the ring.”.

Eliza Olson (6-1-1, 1 KO), daughter of late former world middleweight champion, Carl ‘Bobo’ Olson, is a last-minute replacement for Clampitt’s original opponent, Michelle Linden of Pompano Beach, FL, who broke a bone in her foot during training and was forced to pull out of the fight.

“I know she’s a really tough girl,” said Clampitt of Olson. “She’s fought a lot of good people.”

Jamie Clampitt (11-2, 4KOs) enters the bout riding a 6-fight win streak with her last 2 wins coming by way of knockout and is currently ranked 6th in the world.

“It reflects what I’ve been doing in the gym,” said Clampitt of her recent success. “My trainer, Tiny Ricci, has me working the body. When you get in there and start working the body the girls get tired, then you can go upstairs and knock them out.”

Eliza Olson, ranked 11th in the world, will seek to thwart Clampitt’s title dreams.

“I’ve been training really hard for 6 weeks for this fight,” said Clampitt. “And I’m ready for anybody. It doesn’t matter who they put in front of me.”

The Clampitt-Olson match-up will appear on the undercard of Jimmy Burchfield’s CES ‘Haunted Homecoming’ boxing presentation featuring Providence, RI lightweight contender Gary ‘Tiger’ Balletto versus Gregorio ‘Goyo’ Vargas of Santa Maria Nativido, Mexico as the headline attraction.
The Balletto-Vargas fight will be shown live on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights.
