Veteran British fight figure Bob Shannon, who famously trained Ricky Hatton for his comeback, and whom has been in the corner of a whole host of British fighters in one capacity or another throughout his long career, has been charged with sexual assault. The complaint is believed to stem from an incident last year according to Greater Manchester Police, and the alleged victim is a girl under the age of 16.
It is another devastating blow for Shannon, whose gym in the Openshaw area of Manchester was once a thriving community hub, run as a not-for-profit organisation that produced a wealth of talent at amateur and professional level.
Following it’s eventual closure after a series of funding cuts, rescue missions and mishaps, Shannon and his dwindling stable then moved to Ricky Hatton’s fitness centre in Hyde, Gtr Manchester.
Shannon’s Hatton deal, to train the ill-fated comeback for 3 fights beginning with Ricky’s match against Vyacheslav Senchenko, was meant to be Shannon’s breakthrough as a world level trainer, though Hatton’s loss destroyed his own comeback plans and any hope for Shannon.
For a time Shannon has been working in his other profession as a painter and decorator after falling on hard times. We last saw him in ring on ITV4 on the Frampton v Avalos undercard where he wrapped the hands of Brixton heavyweight Dillian Whyte and appeared in his corner as a 2nd.
Shannon, who according to reports has been bailed, is due before Magistrates in Salford next week on the 25th April. The 59 year old gave an address of Glossop, Derbyshire according to Greater Manchester Police.
