Oscar’s Deadline Passes! Mayweather v Pacquiao Ticket Fiasco Rumbles On!

The panic among those rich enough to secure one, must be rising steadily as tickets for the “Fight Of The Century” are STILL not on sale to the public as at time of writing (Weds am)

A little over 24 hours ago Golden Boy Promotions boss, Oscar De La Hoya issued a day-long offer to anybody with a genuine ticket, that could they take a photo and tweet it to him, he would send them to the May 9th Canelo-Kirkland fight in Texas for nothing.

Needless to say the deadline passed and De La Hoya’s gate receipts will remain intact. The following tweet from the Golden Boy, as the 24hr limit came and went, summed up the feelings of many with regards to the circus surrounding tickets for May 2nd.

“Sorry but the contest is over and nobody has #MayPac tickets as of today with less than two weeks to go. #FansFirst #wheresmyticket ”

It all makes a bit of a mockery of Bob Arum’s early promise that tickets would be on sale come the first week of April. Barely any of the large online ticket distributors are advertising any either as no public auction for companies like “StubHub” and “ticketmaster” to claim any has taken place.

Speculative ticket sales on an event as huge as this are far too much of a risk for such companies. The only one prepared to do so right now is SeatGeek, but as I said, it’s all speculative.

They don’t have any tickets, they just “expect” to get some. Good luck with that, I say.

The actual MGM Grand website still displays a message promising details soon, and also warns people to be aware of buying spec tickets, stating the obvious in that fraudulent tickets will not be accepted.

Arum has refused to accept responsibility for the ticket fiasco, blaming the venue itself, and “the man behind the curtain”.

Make of that what you will, but to me he means Al Haymon. Michael Koncz has also waded in, as he oft does as Manny’s manager, saying;

“It sure is a real mess right now. I’m more than a little upset that they are not yet available to the public.”

Leonard Ellerbe, representing Mayweather promotions, had also promised tickets would be on sale last week. He made reference to the long existing feud between Floyd and Bob Arum that many though may prevent this fight from happening in the first place. He said;

“Bob can not stomach the fact he is not the lead promoter. Every time he doesn’t get his own way, he goes running off to the media mis-representing the facts.”

Ouch. The bottom line is there are no tickets at all on sale. That is of course unless you want a ticket to the weigh-in. For $10 you can get one of those, and in what is an unusual, albeit nice touch, the money raised will be donated to charity.

For many people, the nearest we are getting to the fight is through a television screen anyway. Yet for all those in Vegas, and those rich enough to be in the venue, (which incidentally still hasn’t sorted out the CCTV viewing for other premises inside yet either!) these are very worrying times.

The ticket saga continues…….
