When the names of the six potential referees for May 2nd were put into the public domain, one man’s stood head and shoulders above the rest for many people.
Kenny Bayless, who will turn 65 two days following the fight was unanimously voted in 5-0 by the panel of representatives from the Nevada State Athletic Commission earlier today (tues) and already, less than an hour after the official announcement, the internet has gone into meltdown.
It is believed that the hugely experienced and respected Bayless, was a name that neither the Mayweather nor Pacquiao camps had voiced objections too with regards to the third man in the ring during negotiations.
Bayless, whose last genuine world title contest as a referee was Leo Santa Cruz v Jesus Ruiz back in January, has often been looked at as the go-to referee for big Las Vegas fights.
Throughout his legendary career he has overseen many, many huge world title affairs including BOTH Mayweather and Pacquiao numerous times over the last decade.
The three appointed judges, also voted for unanimously by the commission, are Vegas natives Dave Moretti and Burt Clements, and Conneticut’s Glenn Feldman.
This will be for Bayless, whose catchphrase is “What I say, you obey”, arguably the biggest and most important assignment of his career.
