Gallagher: Some say Corcoran’s dirty but I’m no pushover

Belfast hero Paddy Gallagher has cranked up the heat on world title challenger Gary Corcoran ahead of their war at The SSE Arena on June 30.

‘Pat-Man’ Gallagher (13-4-KO8) clashes with ‘Hellraiser’ Corcoran (17-2-KO7) on the undercard of Michael Conlan’s homecoming in what many expect to be a show-stealing toe-to-toe battle.

Gallagher, for one, is welcoming the prospect of an ultra-physical showdown with his guest.

He said: “Apparently, Corcoran has been known to fight dirty on the inside but if he tries that, he’ll find that I’m a long way from being a pushover.

“If he plans to make it dirty, I can get dirty too – that’s no problem. A few people have also pointed out that he’s prone to cuts so he can choose how he wants it.

“Liam Williams was able to push Corcoran back when he tried to come forward and boss it. He doesn’t have that strength in his arsenal. I’m going to win but I’m not too sure how. I just want to win it in style.

“People love to see action-packed fights like the one we’re going to serve up. People love to see people going down and getting up to fight some more. It’s gladiatorial.

“Because of the way Corcoran likes to fight and because of the way I like to fight, there is bound to be drama in this one.

“From his point of view, he might be stupid and think he’s a big boy because he fought Jeff Horn for the world title. If he does, I’ll steamroller him, but I’m sure he respects me if he’s got any sense.”

The Gallagher v Corcoran showdown is just one of a host of attractive match-ups on the Conlan v Adeilson Dos Santos undercard – also featuring Jack Catterall v Tyrone McKenna, Jono Carroll v Declan Geraghty, Tyrone McCullagh v Joe Ham and Johnny Coyle v Lewis Benson.

Zoirov plots leap from Olympic champ to pro glory

Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov is keen to get started on translating his amateur success to the professional ranks after signing with MTK Global.

The Uzbek was a standout name in a haul of elite signings that included his compatriot Hurshid Tojibaev and Kazakh stars Sultan Zaurbek and Azhbenov Nurtas.

Zoirov, who claimed the flyweight gold medal at Rio 2016, said: “I know boxing isn’t an easy sport but I always had the target of being professional. No matter how hard the road was, I was always going to make it.

“The goal is simple – I want to have a world title. I’m getting there as soon as possible. I’m not sure which weight division it’ll be in but I’ll decide that with my managers and coach.

“I will reach my goal step by step and do whatever it takes to be a world champion.

“I’m delighted to be working with MTK Global. I learned of them through my brother Hurshid Tojibaev. I’ve been watching their work and I like what they do.

“MTK Global is a relatively new company and are doing new things. I’m happy to be working them and together, we can create a new epoch.”
