Jason Welborn is ready get himself back in British Title contention and is predicting a convincing victory over Stanislav Nenkov on Friday evening.
The 28 year-old takes on tough Bulgarian Nenkov on EJKO Promotions’ ‘MayDay’ show at Walsall Town Hall.
Welborn goes into the contest as favourite having lifted the British Masters Light Middleweight Title and Midlands Area equivalent in his last two fights thanks to victories over Birmingham duo Max Maxwell and Terry Carruthers respectively.
He now has his eyes on Liam Smith’s British Title and believes a convincing performance on Friday will put him back in the frame.
“I want a shot at the British Title at light middle,” he told www.uko-boxing.com. “I fought Frankie Gavin for the British (Title) at welterweight but now I know that light middle is a better weight for me.
“I feel stronger and more powerful. I’ve picked up a couple of titles since stepping up last year and now I’m ready for another shot at the British title.
“I saw Liam Smith at Liverpool on Saturday. He was doing some TV work and I was supporting Martin Gethin in his fight against Derry Mathews. I know I can beat him. He’s fighting Nav Mansouri in July and I’d like the winner.
“I’m not taking Nenkov for granted though. I’ve watched a couple of his fights and he’s game. He comes to fight. The preparation for this fight has been the same as my last few fights. I’ve worked as hard for this one as I did for Maxwell and Carruthers.
“I need to put on a good performance Friday and show that he shouldn’t be in the ring with me. I don’t mean that disrespectfully, I just mean I’ve got to show people that I’m levels above him and that I’m a force at light middleweight.”
19 year-old Nenkov has recorded two victories in his homeland this year but lost when he fought on these shores in March. The Razgrad resident was stopped by Kris Agyei-Dua in an International Masters Light Middleweight contest.
