From the office of WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán: WBC Benevolent Fund Starts to Give Aid to 36 Boxers
WBC President Dr. José Sulaimán, on behalf of the Board of Governors, announces that the WBC will distribute more than $250,000 (US) to 36 former world champions this year.
It will be for those fighters who gave glory to the sport, but now live in reduced circumstances.
The WBC has entrusted the Nevada Community Foundation with the administration of this benevolent fund, which is already in motion. It is estimated that this historic action will occur, following the approval of the relevant Committee, within 60 days.
With this, the dream of the WBC President and the Board of Governors – to give protection and a decent life to those who once were great idols and helped cement the foundation of our beloved sport around the world – will finally come true!
The WBC already has $1 million in the fund from an auction of 12 exact replicas of the luxury Hublot watches given to the greatest boxing champions: Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, Julio Cesar Chavez, Larry Holmes, Roberto Duran, Ken Norton, Oscar De la Hoya, Tommy Hearns, Mike Tyson, Jeff Fenech, Lennox Lewis and Azumah Nelson.
