Unbeaten prospects look to steal the show on Top Rank fight card

Very seldom does the boxing community see two undefeated prospects with great potential meet during the developmental stages of their respective careers.

But when both fighters are as avoided as slick San Antonio Welterweight Benjamin Whitaker (7-0, 2 KOs) and dangerous Lithuanian puncher Egidijus Kavaliauskas (6-0, 5 KOs), a risky and uncertain endeavor seems to be the only alternative.

The two men will meet in a brilliant clash of styles on Top Rank’s Glendale, California fight card, which will pit the relentless bull against the slick matador on UniMas’ “Solo Boxeo Tecate”.

The six round special feature will be broadcast as a televised swing bout on Saturday night’s presentation

Whitaker’s head trainer, Rick Morones Jr., claims that his fighter is more than ready for the challenge.

“Ben has been preparing for this kind of test for a very long time,” insists the San Antonio based boxing coach. “He’s ready for the challenge and realizes that bigger opportunities will stem from a victory on Saturday night.”

Whitaker and Kavaliauskas met face to face at Friday’s weigh in, which took place at the Glendale Hilton, seemingly confident and prepared for what should be their toughest respective test to date.

“We know that Kavaliauskas is a big puncher,” states the talented young fight trainer. “But we also know that he’s never faced a fighter quite like Benjamin Whitaker as a professional. We have a lot of respect for him and his team, and we’re thankful that Top Rank is giving us this opportunity to show the world what Benjamin can do in the ring.”

“It should result in a great, action filled fight.”

Also featured on the card will be undefeated Lightweight prospect Ivan “Bam Bam” Najera (13-0, 8 KOs), also from San Antonio, Texas. The 21 year old banger will ostensibly be facing his toughest test to date as well in Virgil Hunter protégé, Stan “The Man” Martyniouk (13-1, 2 KOs), in an eight round special feature.

Ivan is confident that his unique combination of power and pressure will eventually break down his taller, rangier opponent.

“I plan to do whatever is necessary to bring home the big victory on Saturday night,” claims the aggressive minded fighter. “We’ve been working on cutting off the ring and closing the distance effectively. We’ll see if he can handle my power on fight night.”

In the main event of the evening, Jose Felix Jr. (23-1-1, 21 KOs) will be looking to rebound against the upset minded Alejandro Rodriguez (21-14-1, 12 KOs) in an eight round special attraction. The former WBA Super Featherweight title challenger is coming off his first loss as a professional, which took place against experienced veteran Bryan Vasquez on the under card of “Pacquiao/Bradley II” at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, earlier this year.

The UniMas presentation, “Solo Boxeo Tecate”, is slated to begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT.
