On Saturday, September 5, bantamweight standout Antonio “Carita” Nieves (12-0-1, 6KOs) of Cleveland, Ohio, makes his much anticipated ring return against Korea’s Tae Woong Jung (3-2-2, 3KOs) for eight rounds or less at the Presque Isle Downs Casino in Erie, Pennsylvania. The fight is part of a big nine bout card organized by Bizzarro Promotions. Recently, Eastsideboxing.com had the pleasure of interviewing Nieves to get his thoughts on Tae Wong Jung, training camp, and his June draw with fellow undefeated prospect Stephon Young (14-0-2, 6KOs).
GM Ross (GMR): Thanks for doing this Antonio! First of all, can you tell us a bit about training camp? Who has been helping you prepare for this fight?
Antonio Nieves (AN): No problem, anytime! Well, this training camp went extremely well. We did everything that we had to do to be in the best shape possible for whatever type of fight my opponent brings to the table. We sparred several people during this camp but the person that we sparred the most and helped me out a lot was Chase Nelson out of Mansfield, OH.
GMR: This is Tae Woong Jung’s first fight outside Korea. What do you know about him so far?
AN: So far, all I know about Tae Woong Jung is that he throws a good amount of punches and has good footwork. We saw the video of his last fight and think he is a solid opponent.
GMR: You battled your way to a split draw with Stephon Young in June. Are you interested in a rematch?
AN: Yes, I’m interested in a rematch. To this day I still believe I won the fight. It was a good fight between Young and I, but I still think I pulled out a 5-3 victory. The numbers don’t lie, but that just made me hungrier and more focused.
GMR: What should fans expect at an Antonio Nieves fight?
AN: Fans should expect excitement, explosiveness, speed, and intelligence at every Antonio Nieves fight. I’m someone who always comes to fight!
GMR: Anything else you’d like to say to your fans, friends, family, or sponsors?
AN: I would like to say thanks to everybody in my camp that helps me get 100% ready for my fights. Also, thank you to my wife Emeli, for dealing with me when I’m cutting weight and cooking the food that I need to eat to make my weight. I also want to thank my manager at PNC Bank Naser Afaneh who supports me 100% and always helps me out if something comes up out of the blue. Everybody should come out to the fight they won’t be disappointed.
