WBO World Light-Heavyweight Champion Nathan Cleverly has been given a boost by Tottenham and Wales star Gareth Bale ahead of his crucial title defence against Sergey Kovalev tomorrow night at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena.
Welsh hero Cleverly met with Bale on Wednesday night at Cardiff City’s ground before the Wales international friendly against the Republic of Ireland where the undefeated 26-year-old was also announced to the crowd (please see below for a rights for photo to use).
Cleverly and Bale forged a close friendship when they met at a London boxing gym before Clevery’s challenge for the world title in May 2011 against Aleksy Kuziemski and he took the record £100m rated striker on the hand pads.
Although boxing fan Bale won’t be at ringside, he’ll be supporting Cleverly in his explosive showdown with the undefeated Russian KO king who has flattened 19 out of 21 opponents which is live and exclusive on BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546).
“I’m mates with Gareth and he follows my boxing career closely and always wishes me the best ahead of my fights which is great to hear from him,” Said Cleverly
“He keeps a look out for me and what fights I’ve got coming up, he’s heard about the Russian destroyer Sergey Kovalev I’m facing this weekend and he said rather you than me,”
“Gareth’s an unbelievable talent and although I’m a die-hard Cardiff City fan and it hurts me to watch Spurs, I always watch him when he’s playing, especially when he turns out for Wales as well,”
“He said to me he would have loved to be there on Saturday, but it’s more likely he’ll be watching the fight on TV and supporting me,”
“It’s massive test on Saturday against Kovalev and I’m confident I’ll come through it and be up amongst the elite light-heavyweights in the world.”
