(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – 2014 Elite Women’s Continental Championships competition will begin today in Guadalajara, Mexico and two American athletes will take the ring in opening day action at the Pan American Volleyball Complex. 2012 Olympian Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) and welterweight Danyelle Wolf (San Diego, Calif.) will both box in preliminary action tonight with Underwood facing Panama’s Karol Hibbert and Wolf facing Costa Rica’s Karla Rodriguez.
Three more U.S. boxers will compete in Wednesday’s competition with light flyweight Alex Love (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and light heavyweight Heidi Henriksen (St. Louis Park, Minn.) both facing Canadian foes and light welterweight Destiny Chearino (Warwick, R.I.) battling Argentina’s Macarena Ledesma in semifinal round action. Love will take on Taveena Kum in a rematch from the recent USA vs. Canada duel with Henriksen making her international debut in a bout with Alison Greey.
The remaining U.S. boxers will compete for the first time on Thursday. USA Boxing’s two Olympic medalists received first round byes with bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) awaiting the winner of a preliminary bout between Mexico and Costa Rica and Olympic champion Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) facing Brazil’s Flavia Figueiredo on Thursday. Reigning world champion Tiara Brown (Fort Myers, Fla.) also drew an opening round bye and she will battle the winner of a match between Canada and Argentina in her bout on Thursday. Bantamweight Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.) will take on the Dominican Republic’s Laura Alcantara before heavyweight Krystal Dixon (New Rochelle, N.Y.) closes the night in a match-up with host nation boxer Nancy Patino of Mexico.
Coaches Benny Roman (New York, N.Y.), Israel Acosta (Milwaukee, Wis.), and Juan Estrada (San Diego, Calif.) are leading the U.S. team at the Women’s Continental Championships in Guadalajara.
