(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – The United States’ squad added two preliminary round victories on Tuesday at the Boluan Sholak Cultural & Sports Palace in Almaty, Kazakhstan on Tuesday. Lightweight Kenneth Sims, Jr. (Chicago, Ill.) and light welterweight Jose Alday (Odessa, Texas) both earned unanimous decision victories in their tournament openers to advance to second round competition.
Alday was the first U.S. boxer to compete in Tuesday’s competition, facing off with Guinea’s Mamadov Keita in his light welterweight preliminary action. He swept every round on all three judges’ scorecards, winning a 3-0 decision in his first bout. Alday, who has been joined by his father and coach, Jose Alday, Sr., in Kazakhstan, became a father himself while he was overseas. His son, “Little Joey,” was born on October 9 while his fighting father was overseas in training camp, preparing for his first World Championships. He will return to tournament action in a second round contest with the Dominican Republic’s Carlos Adames on Friday afternoon. Adames won a first round TKO in his bout on Tuesday to move on to his showdown with Alday.
Sims took the ring in Tuesday’s evening action, battling Sri Lanka’s Sisira Gedara in his opening round bout. The lightweight won another 3-0 decision victory for the United States squad to move on in tournament action. His second bout of the tournament will present a tough test in the form of Uzbekistan’s 2012 Olympian and number two world ranked lightweight Fazliddin Gaibnazarov on Sunday afternoon. Sims will enjoy the opportunity to avenge the loss of 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez, who fell to Gaibnazarov at the recent Olympics in London.
On Wednesday, welterweight Jamontay Clark (Cincinnati, Ohio) and light heavyweight Geremias Torres (Holyoke, Mass.) will each make their World Championships debuts. Clark will take on Moldova’s Vasili Belous in tomorrow afternoon’s preliminary action, competing at approximately 5:30 a.m. ET. Torres will close afternoon action in a bout with Mongolia’s Erdenebayer Sandagsuren at approximately 6:45 a.m. ET.
