Team Foley – Australian Lightweight Title

ESB - 24/11/2015

November 28th can’t come soon enough for highly rated Lightweight Darragh Foley who features in one of the three title fights on the stacked Channel 9 ‘Footy Fight Night’ in Brisbane.

“Boxing is my life, I live, breathe and sleep boxing. It is not just a sport to me it’s a way of life” said Foley as he wraps his hands ahead of his daily training session.

Foley moved to Australia and turned professional in 2013 after a successful amateur career in Ireland.

“I am a proud Irishman. Since coming to Australia I have fallen in love with the place; the climate, the people, the opportunities and I am proud to call the Bondi Boxing Club home.”

Foley has made an immediate impact on the Australian boxing scene with his exciting style and fight anyone, anytime attitude.

Training under the tutelage of Tony Del Veccio, Foley has been extremely active in the past 12 months fighting five times against tough opposition and becoming the NSW Champion along the way.
“We’ve got Darragh to where he needs to be and I truly believe he will be the next Australian Champion” said trainer Del Veccio

Foley is an exciting fighter to watch inside the ring and a confident and affable character outside the ring. He’s focused on his career in Australia as a professional boxer and has his eyes are securely fixed on the ultimate prize of becoming the Australian Lightweight Champion.
“I’m the former WA State Champion, current NSW State Champion and look forward to showing Australia that I am the number one Lightweight in Australia.”

After a dominating display over former Australian Lightweight Champion Val Borg in October, Foley goes into this Australian Lightweight Title fight as the favourite against current Champion Miles Zalewksi.

“Miles is the current champion but I am the favourite going into the fight. I have had two good stoppages over two former Australian Champions in my past two fights and I am going to make it a hat trick.”

The contest against Val Borg is considered by many in the industry to be one of the best domestic fights of 2015 and has been nominated as ‘Fight of the Year’ on Aus Boxing’s award list. The contest saw Foley knocking down Borg twice in the first round and eventually stopping Borg in the sixth round with a barrage of shots from all angles.

“My last fight I fought against a tough opponent Val Borg. I went in and done what I knew I was going to do. I put him down numerous times in different rounds and ended up closing the show”

“Val was a truly tough competitor, showed a lot of heart and he will be a handful for any other Lightweight in Australia.”

Zalewski is currently undefeated in his past five bouts but has never faced opposition like Foley before. It will be interesting to see if the current Australian Champion is able to withstand the power and relentless pressure that Foley will bring throughout the fight.

“Winning the Australian Title cements who the number one Lightweight is in Australia. I will be bring that belt back to Sydney”
