On the cusp of boxing fame and fortune Rogelio De la Torre of Houston tries to boost his world ranking April 19 as the featured fighter on Standing 8 Promotions latest event at the Hurst Conference Center.
De la Torre [10-2-0, 6 KO] is building on a thrilling sixth-round knockout of Quinton Whitaker in February and will take on the always tough welterweight Milton Ramos of Waco [8-3-2, 2 KO] in an eight-round bout that headlines a fight card loaded with strong welterweights who will battle each other during the second of six Standing 8 events scheduled this year in Hurst.
That group of 147-pounders also features undefeated UK sensation “Cracking’ Craig Callaghan, the highly-anticipated return of Dallas’ Albert Rodriguez, and Texas Gold Gloves legend Jose Orozco taking on Larry “SloMo” Smith, one of the most entertaining fighters in the ring today.
“This will make my third fight in a row in the Fort Worth-Dallas area,” De la Torre said. “The fans up there are great and after my bogus decision loss to Charles Hatley that 95 percent of the people thought I won, Standing 8 still brought me up for a junior-middleweight match, so this is exactly what my career needs.”
Milton Ramos feels he also has a chance to shine the spotlight on his 15-fight career. “I have been in there with some good fighters and now it is my time,” Ramos said.
“I have never left the gym and this is the time to put myself on the map on a national scale.”
The winner of De la Torre-Ramos will be the target for the evening’s other welterweights who will battle each other in future events for the right to take on that winner.
It’s tough to say who will rise to that level but Callaghan [4-0-0, 2 KO] has the boxing skill and punch to do it. He’s tall, with quick hands and a ultra-competitive attitude in training.
After an impressive amateur career in the United Kingdom and fighting as a professional in Australia, he likes his new home.
“The fans in Texas are great,” Callaghan said. “They cheer for me during the fight like I am one of their own, and meet me for drinks afterwards.”
Another of the evening’s undefeated welterweights with strong amateur credentials is Orozco [5-0-0, 2 KO], who is one of only four fighters to win five Texas Gold Gloves championships.
Orozco is focused on winning this series of fights. “This is my time to win this series of bouts and get my world title,” he said.
Smith, who always is entertaining in the ring, said he is donating a portion his night’s purse to National Kidney Foundation and hopes to “continue in this series of fights after this win, get a title down the line and give to a great cause all at the same time.”
Also fighting April 19 will be Tony Lopez [3-0-1, KO], fresh off an impressive knockout March 16 in Thackerville, Oklahoma as a featured fighter on Top Rank’s televised “Solo Boxeo on UniMas.” “I am very blessed to be supported by so many fans and this is the start of a long journey that I have waited for since I was 7 years-old,” Lopez said. “I have very good people around me like trainer Vince Reyes and Standing 8 — I am so excited for the future.”
Standing 8 promoter Dustin Haney is very excited about offering DFW fight fans a series that rewards the winners in the ring, not just the fighters who can make the best deal.
“Since we started last August, I have noticed the deep talent pool of welterweights throughout Texas,” Haney said. “Here in the Metroplex we have several action fighters and we thought it would be great for fans to enjoy a scenario where these fighters could face each other over the next few months.”
