Mike Stafford returns to action on Friday February 28 with one thing on his mind, the British light-heavyweight title.
In a show streamed live and free on VIPBOXING.TV, Southport’s Stafford will appear at his hometown’s Floral Hall almost a year after his last fight, a loss to British cruiserweight champion Jon-Lewis Dickinson.
In April 2013, Mike started brightly against Dickinson before an arm injury saw him succumb to a points defeat. Now, after campaigning for most of his career at 14st 4lbs, the 32-year-old is looking to rule the roost in the division below.
“I’m looking forward to getting back to performing and winning. I’m down at light-heavyweight from now on. I was a small cruiser anyway, so instead of giving advantages away all the time, the shoe will be on the other foot because I’m big for a light-heavy.
“I’ll get Friday out of the way, and then start chasing names,” said Mike, who has won 11 of 13 outings. “I want to get back in the mix sooner rather than later. The plan is to stay busy, get the ring rust off and then, if things go well, go for that British title.”
Stafford will join the likes of Bob Ajisafe, Danny McIntosh and Travis Dickinson who are all chasing the domestic light-heavyweight crown. The former England international believes, though, that he is a cut above the rest and takes heart from his last shot at British title glory.
“My personal view is that I can take them all out, every single one of them. I’m technically better than all of them, and I’m stronger. I think back to the Jon-Lewis Dickinson fight and if my arm hadn’t gone in the fourth round I’d be British cruiserweight champion now; I know I would.”
With former English and Commonwealth super-middleweight title challenger Carl Dilks topping the bill, and Liverpool’s Mike Robinson and exciting local puncher Scott Moonan on the undercard, Mike is promising Southport fight fans an entertaining evening.
“The atmosphere will be electric. I boxed at the Floral Hall in 2009, but I’m a lot more well-known now after boxing on TV and for the British title and we’ve trebled ticket sales. Carl is from just up the road in Bootle, and with Scott on the bill too it will be a great night of boxing.”
Promoter Steve Wood said: “Mike is technically a very skilful boxer and I think he will carry more power down in the light-heavyweight division. He pushed Jon-Lewis Dickinson all the way with just one arm and I have no doubt that he will be another future British champion in the VIP stable.”
VIP Promotions present a top-class evening of boxing at the Floral Hall in Southport on February 28. Fighters from across the North West will be in action including Merseyside’s Carl Dilks; Southport’s former British title challenger Mike Stafford, and Scott Moonan; Liverpool’s Mike Robinson; Oswaldtwistle heavyweight Adam Machaj; and St Helens’ Gary Omrod. Ryan Moorhead and Colin Farricker will both make debuts.
Tickets, priced at £30 (General) and £60 (Ringside), are available from all boxers or at vipbe.co.uk
The show will be streamed live and free on VIPBOXING.TV
