(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Six United States boxers will compete in quarterfinal action on Thursday at the 2013 Junior World Championships in Kiev, Ukraine following four more wins from Team USA in Wednesday’s preliminary action. The day’s victors will join bantamweight Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Pano Tiatia (St. George, Utah) in Thursday’s quarterfinal competition.
Junior middleweight Alexis Rocha (Santa Ana, Calif.) followed his second round TKO win with a unanimous decision victory in Wednesday afternoon action. Rocha took a 3-0 decision over Slovenia’s Alen Puuman in the second round contest to move on to the quarterfinals. He will face off with host nation boxer Ramil Gadzhyyev on Ukraine on Thursday evening.
In light heavyweight action, Suray Mahmutovic (Daly City, Calif.) made a successful tournament debut in a bout with Hungary’s Roland Erdelyi, winning a 3-0 decision. Mahmutovic will compete for a spot in the semifinals on Thursday evening in a quarterfinal contest with Azerbaijan’s Shukran Mehdiyev.
Two more United States boxers garnered spots in the quarterfinal round with wins in Wednesday evening’s action. Light flyweight Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.) earned a 3-0 victory over Mexico’s Luis Pacheco in their second round contest. He will face off with Umed Yakubov of Tajikistan tomorrow night.
Bantamweight Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) claimed the final win of the day for the United States squad in a second round match-up with Aital Diakonov of Russia. Stevenson’s unanimous decision win earned him the final spot in the quarterfinals for the United States. He will take on Georgia’s Valeri Bokeli on Thursday night to move on to the semifinals.
Team USA lost two bouts in the afternoon session with welterweight Javier Estrada (Palmdale, Calif.) dropping a 3-0 decision to India’s Aditya Maan and lightweight Keoni Adric, Jr. (Haleiwa, Hawaii) falling to Georgia’s Muzaffar Rashidov, 2-1. In the evening session, featherweight Michael Nelson (Mansfield, Ohio) lost a 3-0 decision to Uzbekistan’s Boburmizo Tolibov.
Two American boxers earned spots in the quarterfinals via their wins in Tuesday’s competition. Haney will take on Russia’s Suleiman Bammatov in bantamweight quarterfinal competition, and Tiatia will battle Armenia’s Aram Abrahamyan in super heavyweight action on Thursday.
Coaches Edward Rivas (San Antonio, Texas), Willie Moses (Newark, N.J.), Keoni Adric, Sr. (Haleiwa, Hawaii), and Jacob Najar (Indio, Calif.) are serving as the team coaches for the United States team. Ilya Friedman (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is the squad’s Team Manager at the event with Dr. Rodney Muhammad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) working as the Team Physician.
