Brad Watson has a Commonwealth title shot in his sights

Hellraiser Boxing - 01/10/2014

Watson is campaigning at 8st 6lbs after admitting defeat in his battle with the scales – and manager Mickey Helliet is steering ‘The Glamour Boy’ from Guernsey towards a crack at Commonwealth champion Ross Burkinshaw.

Helliet is planning to match Watson in a Commonwealth-title eliminator – if he wins on his show at the Camden Centre on Friday, October 10.

“I’m ready to take the next step,” said the 23 year-old, “and I will box a lot better when I have better opponents in front of me.

“The plan is in place now and that gives me extra motivation.

“There’s no reason why I can’t fight for big titles if I win my next two fights. If the money’s right, I will fight anyone out there.”

To sharpen his tools for what Helliet calls “a massive season,” Watson has headed up to Manchester to spar Paul Butler, currently preparing to challenge Zolani Tete for the IBF super-flyweight title.

“I’m prepared to do these things to bring the best out of myself,” said Watson. “If I’m doing everything right, I’ve got every chance of winning titles.”

Elliott Matthews, Watford’s unbeaten Southern Area champion, is also in action on the show.

Matthews headed to the Mayweather gym this summer and said: “I’m looking to get into contention for the British title this season. There are good fighters out there at 160lbs – but I believe I can take them out.”

Also in action at the Camden Centre are prospects Aarron Morgan, Sammy Cantwell and Lewisham super-bantamweight Junior Saeed returns to the ring after a five-year break.
